Yesterday, I had the absolute joy of catching Lucy Darling in Minneapolis at her performance at the Pantaegous Theater. The show was pure magic. If you haven’t seen Carisa Hendrix perform, she’s a masterclass in charm, comedy, and crowd control. Check out her very funny socials to get a sense of her unique style. I’ve been a fan since 2021 when I started performing again, and it’s been incredible to see her blow-up on TikTok. Without a doubt, she is one of the best character actors in magic. Her “think-a-drink” routine was great to finally see live! Her Himber Rings routine was beautiful, and her “good luck ritual” had the whole audience involved in an incredible, charming way.
What blew me away most wasn’t just the tricks. It was that she built an hour-and-a-half show around just three major effects. Three! The rest was personality, pacing, and playfulness. That’s what separates a magician who does tricks from a magician who creates moments.
As a fellow performer and the guy behind Duck, Duck, Magic! I left inspired. When we magicians show up to support touring artists like Lucy Darling, it’s not just a fun night out—it’s professional development in disguise. You learn timing, structure, audience connection, and how to turn a trick into a story. I was inspired to continue to build my chops at crowd work, and possibly incorporate a camera in bigger shows.
But there’s another reason it matters. Every time a great show like this sells out, it helps all of us. When audiences in Minneapolis see that magic can be sophisticated, funny, and heartfelt, they start seeking it out more at conferences, corporate events, and community gatherings.
